Bride Of The Week : Emily Wai
Written By Kaileah Searcy
Our stunning GL Bride Emily celebrated her love story with an intimate wedding at Château de la Couronne in the south of France. Surrounded by just 19 of their closest family and friends, she and her husband enjoyed a weekend filled with love, joy, and unforgettable memories. From her father leading guests onto the dance floor to a breathtaking fireworks display, every detail reflected their story.
Dressed in the elegant Estelle gown, Emily radiated glamour and grace, creating moments that will be cherished forever. In the following interview, she shares her journey, her love story, and the details that made her celebration truly one of a kind.
“As soon as I tried on the Estelle dress, my jaw dropped."
A moment of your wedding day you will never forget?
There were so many unforgettable moments to choose from, but if I had to pick, it was seeing my dad getting the party started and busting a move on the dance floor as soon as dinner service finished!! Throughout the wedding planning process, one of the things we were dealing with as a family were some serious health issues for my dad, so to see him not only make it to the wedding but lead all my guests to the dance floor is a memory I will cherish forever.
One thing you wish you knew as a new bride? What advice would you give to future brides?
You can plan to the nth degree, but on the wedding day there are a lot of moving parts to coordinate and something will inevitably go wrong. It is how you react, remain calm, and focus on the bigger picture (i.e. getting married to the love of your life) that makes the difference. My advice to future brides would be to stay true to yourself, your style, your aesthetic, and what you as a couple want for your special day. It is easy to get swept up by other opinions, but remember that at the end of the day, this celebration is about you.
A detail that made your wedding special/unique?
We had an extremely intimate wedding, 19 people in total including us, and the entire group stayed at our gorgeous venue Chateau de la Couronne for 3 nights in the south of France (we are from Australia). We wanted to celebrate with only our nearest and dearest and this was the best decision. The weekend was filled with love, fun, and uninterrupted partying. Our guests departed with hearts full and this was undeniably the best weekend of our lives.
How did you know your dress was “the one”?
The Estelle dress was elegant, exuded glamour, and had the perfect touch of sexy. I had tried on countless other dresses and was struggling to find one whose design I liked but was also comfortable and flattering on the body. After I tried on Estelle, I could not stop thinking about it for the next couple of days and that was when I knew I had found “the one.”
How did it feel when you put on your dress the day of the wedding? What was everyone's reaction to the dress?
Putting on the dress on the day of the wedding was a surreal and out of body experience. After planning the wedding for over 2 years, I could not believe the day had finally arrived. My HMUA immediately exclaimed that this was the most beautiful dress she had ever seen (she has done weddings for over 10 years), and I have never felt more beautiful, like a Disney princess. The guests’ reactions were equally emphatic and I was showered in gasps and compliments.
Would you have done anything differently?
This sounds cliché but I would not have changed a thing. Even the hiccups that happened on the day are now part of what makes our wedding day story epic.
"I have never felt more beautiful, like a Disney princess."
What was your favorite part of the wedding to plan/what were you most looking forward to?
The cake and the fireworks. I am a huge foodie and I wanted the cake to be both delicious and gorgeous. We ended up going with a large tart that was 1 metre in diameter and was divided into 4 flavours, and as part of the reveal there was an interactive element where all the guests decorated the cake with edible flowers, nuts, choux pastry puffs, and much more. We engaged Benjamin and Adelina, who were contestants on the 11th season of Meilleur Pâtissier, and they were amazing.
I also have a huge obsession with fireworks, and getting them approved was a labour of love (it required mayoral approval and was a bit touch and go for a while). We ended the formal part of our wedding dinner with a firework display that wowed our guests and made my dreams come true. Credit goes to Lucy and Ben at the chateau for pursuing this and making it happen for us.
How did you meet your husband? How did he propose?
I met my husband 12 years ago when we were both in university. Over the next 5 months our friendship blossomed until we shared our first kiss in November 2013. Since then, we have shared many adventures together and practically all of life’s milestones.
My husband proposed in April 2022 at the Shangri-La in Paris on our first holiday post COVID. He had told me we were going out to dinner, but as we stepped out of the hotel, a limousine awaited to take us to our destination. Upon arrival, he proceeded to blindfold me as we went up the lift. He guided me to what I assumed was an entrance and asked me to wait about 30 seconds before removing the blindfold. When I did, I found myself in a gorgeous hotel suite and my husband was standing on a balcony covered in white flowers and petals, pillar candles framing a “will you marry me” sign, a violinist, and the Eiffel Tower in the background. What he said to me was a bit of a blur, but I obviously said yes and after a glass of champagne, we were whisked away for a photoshoot and returned to the suite for a private degustation. It was the best night.
How did you find working with the team at Galia Lahav?
Being from Sydney, Australia, I unfortunately did not have access to a boutique, but purchased my dress from a stockist called Eternal Bridal. My sales associate Lauren was very helpful and I had a wonderful experience.
How many dresses did you try on before you found it?
I tried on dozens of dresses at almost every wedding boutique in Sydney. While most brides struggle to choose between the many options, I found it really difficult to find a dress that made me feel glamorous, luxurious, and beautiful. As soon as I tried on the Estelle dress, my jaw dropped. I went home that day and could not stop thinking about the dress, and that is when I knew this was the dress for me. 48 hours later, I was putting down a deposit and locked it in.
Anything else you would like to add?
Nothing could have prepared us for all the emotions and happy tears during this weekend. We floated the idea of a vow renewal in the future and our guests could not be more excited for it.
