Your wedding dress is a major source of inspiration for your event’s style and décor, from the invites to the venue; and it’s especially influential to your cake’s design. “A bride's wedding gown is the ultimate representation of her personal style and emotions she has when she thinks of her big day,” says Maria Nicoletti, owner of Grace & Honey Cakes. “A wedding cake should not just be a literal sugar recreation of flowing fabrics, crystals, and lace, but should also capture the same feelings of femininity, romance, and elegance that the bride felt when she found her wedding dress.” Here, we’ve paired bridal gowns from our latest collections with beautiful cakes and asked top wedding cake designers for their tips and insight on drawing inspiration from your dress for your celebratory dessert.
Use the most prominent, prettiest detail from your dress in the design of your wedding cake to make it completely unique. “When I design a wedding cake, I’m most excited about being inspired by a detailed element of the event. Whether it be the stationary, florals, or patterns, anything can be translated into a cake design. However, my favorite source of inspiration is the dress,” says Nicoletti. This 4-tiered confection by Grace & Honey Cakes was made up of individual molds of fondant pieced together to resemble the embroidered appliqué on the bride’s gown. This type of technique allows your cake to match the intricate appliqué on a gown like our Judy tulle trumpet dress with delicate floral embellishments.
A simple-structured cake allows a cake designer’s expertise to pop, much like on this one by Grace & Honey Cakes, which was directly inspired by our Camilla trumpet gown. This cake features small threads of icing piped into branches with delicate sugar petals to mimic the 3-D embroidery on the silk tulle dress.
The drape and folds of your bridal gown will offer a lot of inspiration and allow your cake designer to be imaginative with your cake. “Galia Lahav’s innovative cuts and daring silhouettes are the perfect directions for designing a modern wedding cake, while the rich fabrics inspire the textures on our cakes,” says celebrity cake designer Ron Ben-Israel of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes who designed this clever confection with a bow made of sugar icing, which complements the flirty cutouts and bows on our Margaret ballgown featuring.
Recreating the 3-D details on your wedding dress makes for a stunning cake. “Our most distinctive wedding cake designs are inspired by the details of the bride’s wedding dress,” says Yevnig Davis, owner of Unique Cakes by Yevnig. “A wedding trend we’re seeing for 2020 and 2021 are cakes decorated with handcrafted sugar flowers, painted cake designs, and Royal Icing returning with a modern twist.” This cake by Unique Cakes by Yevnig, featuring a burst of handcrafted sugar roses, makes a perfect match with our Maya silk tulle gown.
Frills & Ruffles
You don’t have to pick just one detail from your dress to design your cake. Replicate the mixed textures of your gown to create a signature wedding cake. This cake by Unique Cakes by Yevnig with sugar flowers and handcrafted ruffles subtly translates the 3-D blooms on the bodice of our Sally gown and its voluminous tulle skirt.
