Fabric Focus: French Lace, Silk Tulle, and Beyond

October 8, 2026

If there’s one element that is crucial in how a gown falls, flows and flatters, it’s fabric. Couture pieces are painstakingly sourced to ensure that just the right material is found to create exceptionally beautiful and precious pieces. Nothing works without the right fabric - not the cut against your frame, nor the end result photographs. Material is key for absorbing the right depth of light in pictures - crucial in our social media age, where brides rightly want to optimise their day from every angle.

At Galia Lahav, exquisite fabric choices are at the heart of every creation. In the Fall/Winter 2026 Couture collection - entitled Keepsake - its material moments are a direct descent from the core inspiration of the Gilded Age. These extravagant yet refined gowns are intended to evoke the late 19th century feel of opulent romance, with heirloom-like features woven in through the material choices rich with their own storied relevance.

HUDSON

Take for example the sweeping romance of the ASTOR gown. It’s fashioned from silk taffeta, which originated from 12th century Baghdad and has long evoked high society status. The $1 million dollar couture piece, created in collaboration with diamond house Leibish, features a decadent double layered skirt and dramatic train. The stiff, crisp, luminous ivory taffeta folded into a box pleat upholds the full structure of the gown, while it might look heavy, in reality it’s light as air. In contrast to the width of the skirt, the bustier top is sweetly trimmed with antique, hand-dyed lace.

The HUDSON also offers the drama of a full, sweeping skirt, but rendered in a featherlight, stiff rare organza chosen to emulate the grandeur of a classic crinoline. One for the detail obsessives, its corset bodice is sculpted from French lace with shimmering 3D beaded appliqué with delicate flora shaped lace straps, too.

BROOKLYN

For brides seeking a powerful modern statement with a nod to that age of opulence, the BROOKLYN is an extraordinary mermaid gown constructed from lashings of French lace (introduced as Venetian lace to the French court by Catherine Medici’s 1533 marriage to King Henry II). Here, it is layered onto a clever power mesh base (like a second skin) the curved sweetheart neckline gown is covered in an exquisite floral patterned lace, with beading and 3D lace flowers embellishments to add depth and drama to the sleek piece. Further frou comes from the asymmetric peplum lace detail cascading from the waist.

HELEN

If you seek a lighter bridal look, pleated silk satin - which dates back to Ancient Egypt - offers a romantic twist. The HELEN gown has a deep white silk satin skirt - with a beautiful glimmering sheen which picks up the light just so - runs down in sweeping plissé folds, pooling luxuriously on the floor. The pleated theme continues across the low-waisted corset, sculpted in a hand draped butterfly effect. History in the making.
